For the past few years, Makaylah Anderson, founder of Makaylah's House, has been working on starting a homeless veteran rehabilitation center in Michigan. Makaylah has begun working with James Smith, an Air Force veteran and business owner, as a mentor and advisor for this project.
In this center, veterans on the streets of Michigan will be able to get the help they need. Many veterans have fought for our country and are living out on the streets, homeless, and are struggling with Post-Traumatic-Stress Disorder and other mental health disorders. Many face physical limits due to their involvement in the military. Often it isn't just one or the other; our veterans face both physical and mental disorders that limit their abilities in their day-to-day life. These limitations are exacerbated by the fact that they are homeless, with no place to safely lay their head at night. The goal is to help rehabilitate them in a loving, non-institutionalized environment!
Makaylah is passionate about Makaylah's House's success because her great-grandpa was a veteran, and he lived in a veteran's home. It was a miserable place. In this home, there were many issues with personal property theft. Her family could never bring him any gifts because they would just get stolen. The home environment was morbid, which is extremely sad because this is where people live and are trying to heal. He never seemed happy, even when he got to see his family. Everything just seemed so grey. She wanted a place where her great-grandpa could be happy all the time. Unfortunately, he has passed now. But ALL our veterans deserve to live with health and peace.
Makaylah's House will provide a beacon of hope and a place where veterans, including those who are homeless, can come and get help in a warm, inviting and supportive community.
Makaylah's House seeks to achieve the following goals:
Any veteran, regardless of age, can enjoy the facility, including rooms, amenities, and all available care. Employees providing care to our veterans will understand that those they serve have helped and defended our country—and will be treated accordingly. Makaylah’s House is for veterans to feel dignified and respected for their service while providing a place that makes them feel at home.
Provide military veterans a home, shelter, and retreat that provides medical/physical/emotional care, rooms, and amenities that provide comfort and facilitate healing. The facility will be eco-friendly and sustainable.
Makaylah’s House was created to reach out to homeless veterans in Michigan and then expand to help veterans in different states. Veterans will have access to shelter, transportation, and other needed services in a loving and compassionate environment.
Makaylah's House, Inc., a Michigan Non-profit Corporation, was recognized by the IRS as a 501(c)3 Non-Profit Organization on January 21, 2022. The EIN is 87-1874383. Tax-deductible donations can be sent to Makaylah's House, Inc, 2014 N. Saginaw Rd, Suite 196, Midland, MI 48640.
Makaylah's House is seeking partners and strong supporters, like you, to help bring this project to fruition. Our goal is to begin meeting the immediate needs of shelter in tiny homes and transportation for veterans in the area. The proposed location for Makaylah's House is 246 8 Mile in Midland, Michigan. To achieve this goal, below is a list of current needs:
We need your help to raise awareness for the project on social media, news outlets, and through personal connections. Regardless of the donation size, any amount will help Makaylah's House begin providing shelter and transportation to our veterans. Donations at this point will be applied toward achieving Phases 1 and 2.
We are seeking construction partners to assist in every phase of development: excavation, building, building material supplies (ie. windows, doors, materials, etc), HVAC, electrical, plumbing, renewable energy, landscaping, etc. Partners will be recognized on the Makaylah's House website and will receive FREE advertising with MESA Enterprises inside of the Midland Mall. In addition, all partners will be advertised on the property.
We are looking for a naturopathic doctor or alternative medicine practitioners to donate time to meet the basic needs of veterans living on the property in tiny houses.
We are seeking vehicle donations to provide transportation to resident veterans to the Clare and Saginaw VA medical facilities.
